Cpl. Evan Boes and Lance Cpl. Frank Barnes, both radio operators with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), set up communications between the forward command element (FCE) back to the 31st MEU embarked on amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), upon landing in the Central Training Area, Okinawa, Japan, Jan. 21, 2021. The FCE was deployed along with the humanitarian assistance survey team to rehearse the coordination of foreign humanitarian assistance in the event of a natural disaster. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the America Expeditionary Strike Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
