    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Erik Peterson, Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Womack, and Sgt. Carlos Munoz, with the humanitarian assistance survey team (HAST) from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), discuss the barriers to delivering humanitarian aid in the wake of a natural disaster with role players posing as a non-governmental organization during a foreign humanitarian assistance (FHA) exercise in the Central Training Area, Okinawa, Japan, Jan. 21, 2020. The HAST was deployed from amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) in the Philippine Sea along with the MEU’s forward command element to rehearse the coordination of foreign humanitarian assistance in the event of a natural disaster. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the America Expeditionary Strike Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
