U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Zakary Vanderkooi, a special signals operator with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and a native of Annville, Kentucky, is detained during a riot control class aboard dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) on Jan. 26, 2021. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, is operating aboard ships of the America Amphibious Ready Group in the Indo-Pacific region to enhance interoperability with partners and serve as a ready-response force for any type of contingency.
