Master Sgt. William Call, the bandmaster for the Marine Corps Band New Orleans, embarks USS De Wert, Aug. 19. The Navy frigate will transport Marines through Northern United States during a seven-week trip celebrating the War of 1812. The Marine band joined Navy Band Great Lakes to perform during the War of 1812 Commemoration celebrations in Chicago. A three-year national celebration honoring the War of 1812 and “The Star-Spangled Banner” began in New Orleans in April 2012 with other celebrations taking place in New York, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland and other cities. The Marine Corps’ role in this event reinforces its naval character and showcases the Navy-Marine Corps team.
