Lt. Paul Hast (left) received the Iwo Jima Leadership award, and Lt. Nick Gonsalves received the Honor Graduate award during their graduation from Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC’s) Amphibious Warfare (AMW) Warfare Tactics Instructor (WTI) course of instruction Friday December 4th. Seven new AMW WTIs graduated during the ceremony held onboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. Hast was selected by the instructors as the Honor Graduate based on his academic excellence, and Gonsalves was selected by his peers for the Iwo Jima award because of his superb leadership qualities throughout the fifteen-week course. SMWDC accepts applications from top-talented junior Surface Warfare Officers and develops them into one of four surface warfare WTI specialties – AMW, integrated air and missile defense, anti-submarine warfare/surface warfare, or mine warfare.
