U.S. Army Cpl. Clyde C. Brown, left, of Long Beach, California, and Sgt. Henry C. Blackwell, Jr., of South Gate, were deployed with the California Army National Guard's 251st Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft) during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. The pair, who learned to fly through the Army's Civilian Pilot Training Program, were on a sightseeing flight in a civilian aircraft the morning of the attack and were shot down by oncoming Japanese fighter planes. They, along with passenger and fellow unit member Sgt. Warren D. Rasmussen, 19, of Compton, California, are believed to be the first three American service members killed during the attack.
