Sara Schuster, large mammal biologist with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands, expounded on the various plants that desert bighorn sheep eat at the Thirsty Canyon, Nevada, Nov. 15, 2020. Desert bighorn sheep eat tall grass called galleta grass (Pleuraphis jamesii) and short grass called Indian ricegrass (Oryzopsis hymenoides), commonly found at the Nevada Test and Training Range. They bulk up on shrubs during fall to preserve winter fat. Desert bighorn sheep do not hibernate during the winter or fall. (U.S. Air Force photo by 2nd Lt. Nicolle E. Mathison)
