LS1 Brian Do, leading petty officer with NAVSUP FLC San Diego Site Ventura, removes the blocking and bracing for an MK-25 canister containing an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM), to transport onto the Self Defense Test Ship’s (SDTS) Aft Vertical Launching System (VLS). At FLCSD Site Ventura, one of the major and more heavily concentrated activities that Pt. Mugu plays a fundamental role in, are the Self Defense Test Ship evolutions. SDTS requires the meticulous coordination across several stakeholders to include Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Navy Munitions Command (NMC), and Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC). The primary function of the evolution is to safely on load and off load numerous types of explosives as high as 1.1E (mass explosion possible) onto a Spruance-class destroyer formerly known as the USS Paul F. Foster (DD-964). Due to minimal civilian manning, LS1 Do stepped up to the plate and went above and beyond to continue mission support to the Fleet. With his own initiative, he not only obtained a Naval Motor Vehicle Inspector certification (AMMO-51) which is critical to perform this evolution, but he also obtained his Transportation of Hazardous Materials certification (AMMO-62); which requires a very extensive two-week course on how to properly and safely certify hazardous materials for transport.
