The Honorable Thomas McCaffery, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, observes a Combat Medic Specialist Program student as she assesses and treats a "casualty" in the Combat Trauma Patient Simulator at the Medical Education and Training Campus Oct. 20. The casualties in the CTPS are life-like manikins called human patient simulators that appear to have received traumatic injuries, ranging from gunshot wounds to amputations, in an "explosion" set off by a suicide bomber. The realistic training conditions allow students to make mistakes without harming anyone while gaining the experience they need to be effective on a real patient in a battlefield environment. McCaffery met with METC leadership and toured programs to learn how the schoolhouse trains and prepares the future enlisted medical force during as part of a multi-day visit to Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 19-21.
