Walrath (right), commanding general, U.S. Army South, commemorate the 199th anniversary of Ejército del Perú, or Army of Peru, Aug. 18 at the Army South Main Conference Room. On Aug. 18, 1821, the Peruvian Army was officially established when the government of General José de San Martín established the Legión Peruana de la Guardia (Peruvian Guard Legion). Six years later, in 1827, the U.S. established diplomatic relations with Peru, and today the U.S. and Peru’s strategic partnership continues to enhance security and prosperity across the region to collectively meet complex global challenges.
