PACIFIC OCEAN (July 28, 2020) – U.S. Navy Captain Tom. A. Ulmer, captain of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), oversees the departure of the Secretary of the Navy, Commandant of the Marine Corps, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, and distinguished guests during their visit to the Makin Island. This trip, Braithwaite's first trip to San Diego as Secretary, included engagements with Marines, Sailors and civilians and visits to a number of naval platforms including surface, subsurface, and aviation units.
