The commander of the California Army National Guard’s 1040th Quartermaster Company, 1st Lt. Zachary Ota, gets involved in the fast-paced action at the Merced County Food Bank in Merced, California, Aug. 3, 2020. About a dozen troops delivered approximately 1,000 boxes of food — each weighing 25-40 pounds — to Merced County residents in a span of four hours. This is the routine three times a week, with another two days spent packing food into boxes. Cal Guard hasn’t slowed its statewide food bank operations and is closing on packaging and distributing 85 million pounds of food across the state. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt.
