SAN DIEGO (July 19, 2020) Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Russell Smith, speaks to Damage Controlman 2nd Class Jeff Garvin, assigned to the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), about his experience during the fire. Garvin was one of the first investigators on the scene and knocked down by the first explosion; after recovering and regrouping he geared up again to fight the fire. He was knocked down again by the second more powerful explosion that flung debris across the pier onto the USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62). Again, he pulled himself together and tried to get back into the fight before he was given a break by a relief team. MCPON Smith noted that Garvin's heart and courage is what our Sailors have that will previl during combat. On the morning of July 12, a fire was called away aboard the ship while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego. Base and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018. (U.S. Navy photo by Senior Chief Mass Communication Specialist Anastasia McCarroll)
