Josh Coates, Geographic Information System (GIS) project manager at Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast uses a mobile GIS to record a building damage assessment onboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville, during an exercise designed to test new technology for Contingency Engineering Response Teams (CERT). CERTs deploy to installations located within the southeast in response to natural disasters, such as hurricanes. The mobile GIS will allow the CERT to record thorough damage assessments and quickly provide that data to installation commanders. This will help prioritize facilities needing repair in order to bring the base back to full operational capability, as quickly as possible.
