California Army National Guardsmen from Alpha Company, 223rd Military Intelligence Battalion, 115th Regional Support Group, wear face coverings May 5 at the Solano Food Bank in Fairfield, California. The masks are courtesy of Spc. Kimberly Ortiz, one of their comrades. After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended using cloth face coverings to help slow the spread of COVID-19, Ortiz’s unit didn’t obtain masks immediately. Ortiz took matters into her hands and initiated her mother, Los Angeles resident Paulina Hernandez, to help. The longtime seamstress responded by mending nearly 100 cloth coverings for her daughter’s unit. (Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Eddie Siguenza)
