In April the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended using cloth face coverings to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Ortiz’s unit didn’t obtain masks immediately, so she initiated her mother, Los Angeles resident Paulina Hernandez, a longtime seamstress, to help.
