U.S. Navy Lt. Kelsey Mikkelson, medical-surgical nurse, administers an IV of 100-milliliter saline solution to Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Mercedez Stout during a demonstration at the Michaud Expeditionary Medical Facility (EMF) at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti May 6, 2020. Each year, nurses at the EMF and across the U.S. are recognized during National Nurses Week, which begins May 6. The week ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the founder of modern nursing. Additionally, on May 13, the Navy will celebrate the 112th birthday of the Navy Nurse Corps. The corps was created on May 13, 1908, when President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Naval Appropriations Bill. Today, there more than 4,000 active and reserve nurses in the Navy filling roles in 17 different specialties. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt. Brok McCarthy)
