SOUTH CHINA SEA (April 21, 2020) Joint terminal attack controllers (JTAC) with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) coordinate fires with F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft during a Tactical Air Control Party exercise aboard amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6). JTACs provide a critical battlespace shaping capability to the MEU by communicating directly with air support assets to call for fire in support of maneuver elements. America, flagship of the America ESG, 31st MEU team, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
