PHILIPPINE SEA (April 9, 2020) Cmdr. Matthew Weems, a chaplain with amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), leads Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and Sailors aboard the America in the celebration of Maundy Thursday in the America chapel. While underway, Chaplains aboard the America host services of various religions and denominations for the Marines and Sailors on board. The Navy Chaplain Corps consists of over 800 Chaplains from over 100 faith groups in order to meet the needs of Marines’ and Sailors’ different beliefs. America, flagship of the America Expeditionary Strike Group, 31st MEU team, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
