Lieutenant Col. Terry M. Johnson, commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, talks to his assembled Marines after an award ceremony here, June 22. Johnson gave awards to several squad leaders in his battalion for their outstanding performances during the battalion’s squad assessment training. “The squad level training is the most important training we do,” he said. “At the end of the day, when the battalion fights, it is a group of squads put together. That’s where we get our warfighting power.” Johnson presented Sgt. Austin R. McKinney with the inaugural Sgt. Lucius E Hanes Trophy for Squad Leader Excellence.
