Sergeant Austin R. McKinney, a squad leader with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, accepts the inaugural Sgt. Lucius E. Hanes Trophy for Squad Leader Excellence from Lt. Col. Terry M. Johnson, battalion commanding officer, during an awards ceremony here, June 22. The award was named in honor of Sgt. Lucius E. Hanes, a former member of the battalion who was awarded the Silver Star during the Korean War. McKinney was awarded the trophy for leading his squad to the best overall performance during the battalion’s squad assessment training.
