U.S. Marine Gen. David H. Berger, commandant of the Marine Corps, Maj. Gen. Michael F. Fahey III, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South, and Col. Vincent Dawson, commanding officer of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Southern Command, come together with retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Hershel Williams during the Expeditionary Sea Base USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB-4) commissioning ceremony at Norfolk, Virginia, March 7, 2020. The ship was named after Williams, a then corporal whose acts of heroism in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II earned him the highest decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor. MARFORSOUTH continues to assess different amphibious and non-traditional naval platforms to enable Marine deployments in the Western Hemisphere, increasing naval readiness and ability to integrate with our partners. The ESB, a mobile sea base, supports the deployment of forces and supplies from ship to shore. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Amy Phan/Released)
