Marine Corps Maj. Julia Weber, a Naval Postgraduate School Operations Research student, participates in a TEDx event at Santa Catalina School, an all-girls college prep boarding and day school in Monterey, Calif., where she delivers remarks regarding her experience while working at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, Feb. 12, 2020. This event marks the 7th annual TEDx event hosted, led and streamed live by a student-run club at the school. The theme for this year’s event is “Picture This” – “all great ideas and innovations start with a single thought–a dream–and perhaps just a simple one. It is ideas coupled with action that shape the present and make a change.” The TEDx event aims to share the ideas within the local community that can change the world for the better. Weber was one of seven speakers from the around the Monterey community. During Weber’s time working in the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan, she saw a need to improve the conditions of stray animals. By rallying other foreign diplomats in Pakistan, she founded the nonprofit organization Islamabad PAWS (Pakistan Animal Welfare Society) in 2017. Islamabad PAWS is dedicated to improving the conditions of stray and abandoned dogs. In her heartwarming and inspiring talk titled, “What Do You See,” Weber shares her thoughts on leadership, being a global citizen, and seeing and answering the call to lead in innovative ways. Weber attended Mount Holyoke College where the first women cadets were sworn into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. (U.S. Navy photo by Javier Chagoya/Released)
