The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB-10) is moored to the Maersk Peary during refueling operations Jan. 30, 2020, about seven miles north of McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The Maersk Peary is a fuel tanker carrying approximately 7.6 million gallons of fuel for delivery to McMurdo Station to sustain year-round operations on the 7th continent, and the Polar Star took on approximately 600,000 gallons of fuel during the fuel transfer. The crew of the Seattle-based Polar Star is working near Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze 2020, the U.S. military’s contribution to the National Science Foundation-managed U.S. Antarctic Program.
