U.S. Marines from 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, observe helicopters from Japan Ground Self-Defense Force conduct dive fire training during exercise Northern Viper on Yausubetsu Training Area, Hokkaido, Japan, Jan. 27, 2020. This iteration of Northern Viper is the first time that Marines and the JGSDF have held dive fire training in Hokkaido, Japan. Northern Viper is a regularly scheduled training exercise that is designed to enhance the interoperability of the U.S. and Japan Alliance by allowing Marine Air-Ground Task Forces from III Marine Expeditionary Force to maintain their lethality and proficiency in MAGTF Combined Arms Operations in cold weather environments. This iteration of the exercise is executed by units across III MEF including an activated reserve unit, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, currently attached to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, as part of the unit deployment program, alongside their counterparts from 5th Brigade, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
