Retired Rear Adm. Sam J. Cox, director of Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), discusses the U.S. Navy’s bathyscaphe Trieste’s dive to the deepest place on Earth, the Challenger Deep located at the southern end of the Mariana Trench, during a ceremony held at the National Museum of the United States Navy (NMUSN). In early 1980, the bathyscaphe was transported to the Washington Navy Yard, where the vessel was placed on exhibit at the NMUSN. NHHC, located at the Washington Navy Yard, is responsible for the preservation, analysis, and dissemination of U.S. naval history and heritage.
