U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Alexander Thomas places a sensor in a tree during a field training exercise on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Dec. 10, 2019. Thomas, a native of Baltimore, is an assistant team leader with Ground Sensor Platoon, 3rd Intelligence Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group.

“Our job is to detect without being detected,” Thomas said. “Put us with anyone. I will take the job of ten to fifty men and convert them to sensors. Saving time, body, mind, and food.”

Ground sensor Marines use different sensors to monitor gaps on a battlefield, allowing them to detect enemy movements. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Mackenzie Carter)
