Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Allena, the battalion commander of 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, speaks to the friends, family members and Marines of Battery G, 2/11, about the significance of, and actions deserving of, the combat distinguishing device on a medal following an awards ceremony at the Camp Las Pulgas chapel, June 6. Staff Sergeant Vincent Bell and Cpl. Conner Lowry lost their lives while conducting combat operations during the battalion's recent deployment to Helmand province, Afghanistan. Following the battalion's memorial service, the battery conducted the awards ceremony to present the mothers of both Marines with their sons' medals for combat valor. Bell was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing device and Lowry was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device and gold star in lieu of second award.
