U.S. Air Force airfield pavement evaluation team from Air Force Central Command (AFCENT) and the 577th Expeditionary Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer Squadron, use a dynamic cone penetrometer on the runway at Q – West, Iraq, Nov. 30, 2019. The airfield pavement evaluation team from AFCENT travels across theater to evaluate airfields utilized by U.S. forces using a pavement condition index evaluation and a dynamic cone penetrometer to determine the strength of the pavement and soil underneath the runway. The results from their evaluation gives mission planners insight on the runway’s condition, what type of aircraft it can support and the longevity of the pavement. (U.S. Army Reserve photo by Sgt.
