U.S. Air Force Capt. Brendan Maestas, Air Force Central Command (AFCENT) pavement evaluation team, measures the dimensions of concrete slabs to conduct a pavement condition index (PCI) on Q – West airfield, Iraq, Nov. 29, 2019. The airfield pavement evaluation team from AFCENT travels across theater to evaluate airfields utilized by U.S. forces using a PCI evaluation and a dynamic cone penetrometer to determine the strength of the pavement and soil underneath the runway. The results from their evaluation gives mission planners insight on the runway’s condition, what type of aircraft it can support and the longevity of the pavement. (U.S. Army Reserve photo by Sgt.
