U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Marcos Lopez with the 859th Engineer Company, Mississippi National Guard, guides a 10-ton forklift to hitch a generator trailer on loan to the airfield pavement evaluation team from Air Force Central Command (AFCENT) at Q – West, Iraq, Nov. 29, 2019. The AFCENT airfield pavement evaluation team travels across theater to evaluate airfields utilized by U.S. forces using a pavement condition index evaluation and a dynamic cone penetrometer to determine the strength of the pavement and soil underneath the runway. The results from their evaluation gives mission planners insight on the runway’s condition, what type of aircraft it can support and the longevity of the pavement. (U.S. Army Reserve photo by Sgt.
