The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District's Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) team is partnering with the National Park Service, the San Francisco Regional Water Quality Board and the S.F. Health Department, to sample soil at Ft. Miley Reservation in San Francisco.
Environment construction crews began taking soil samples on Nov. 18, with the partner agencies observing their work near defunct U.S. Army gun batteries that have not been in service since the 1940s.
The FUDS team is currently determining if underground heating oil tanks were properly emptied and sealed in the 1990s. If contamination is found, the team will begin remediation efforts. (U.S. Army photo by Ken Wright)
