Don’t let a fall morning sunrise be interrupted by the smoke...the annual Great American Smoke Out event On Nov. 21, 2019, at Naval Hospital Bremerton provided the opportunity for those who used any type of tobacco products to just give up the routine for a day. Documented medical research has shown that just as soon as a person stops smoking, there are healthy benefits. After one hour from that last tobacco/nicotine ingestion, a person’s heart rate and blood pressure drops and their circulation may improve. After 12 hours without smoking, the body cleanses itself of such harmful toxins as carbon monoxide and increases oxygen levels. After just one day, a smoker’s risk of heart disease is lessened as their blood pressure drops. And with the increase in oxygen levels, exercise and physical fitness are easier leading to mission and operational readiness, not to mention improved senses like smell, taste, and sight (Official Navy photo by Douglas H Stutz, Naval Hospital Bremerton public affairs officer).
