A contracted trainer from SAFE Boats International provides instruction to members of the Grenada Coast Guard during a training session as part of the U.S. maritime security assistance initiative called Secure Seas. The Secure Seas program, part of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative and managed by U.S. Southern Command, is providing patrol boats and communications systems to nine Eastern Caribbean nations to help deter regional maritime threats associated with transnational organized crime. The interceptor boats, developed by SAFE Boats, are fitted with state-of-the-art communications and radar suites and can reach speeds in excess of 60 mph.
