    Marine Corps Base Quantico

    The headstone of Sergeant Major Henry H. Black, an Imperial, Pennsylvania native, and the 7th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps can be seen in Quantico National Cemetery, Nov. 10, 2019, in Triangle, Virginia. Black served in the Marine Corps from 1948-1977, including several tours in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. His personal awards include a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star with ā€œVā€ for valor and two award stars, a Purple Heart, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, among several others. Black also spent time as a recruiter and a drill instructor before becoming the SMMC for two years, from 1975-1977. Black passed away in his home in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 2012 and is commemorated each year on the Marine Corps Birthday, Nov. 10, during a wreath-laying ceremony at his grave site in Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Virginia. The ceremony is conducted by Marines from Marine Corps Base Quantico, including the Base Sergeant Major.
