Don Poleto, the port harbormaster with Buffalo Department of Public Works, moves a trash can covered in zebra mussels off to the side of the Bird Island Pier, located in Buffalo, NY, during an inspection of the pier November 6. The storm on October 31 washed the trash can onto the pier. The Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and DPW inspected the pier to get an assessment of the amount of damage the storm caused to the structure. The storm on Halloween created 10-20 foot waves on Lake Ontario, which caused a portion of the pier to be pushed off its foundation and into the Black Rock Channel located in Buffalo, NY.
