Col. Paul E. Funk II, a native of Roundup, Mont., and commander of the 1st "Ironhorse" Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, speaks with a local sheik in the village of Jubeb, near Abu Ghraib, Iraq, Sept. 19. The meeting was part of a trend toward cooperation in Abu Ghraib, where an "awakening" of Sunni sheiks sparked the growth of a homegrown security force. These citizens grew tired of the violence of Sunni extremists in the area and took up arms in support of the coalition.
