U.S. sailors aboard the USS Underwood (FFG 36) rinse the anchor chain as the guided missile frigate gets under way in the Pacific Ocean May 20, 2012, for the exercise scenario phase of Unitas 53 Pacific (PAC). Underwood was representing the U.S. Navy in support of Unitas 53 PAC and Southern Seas 2012. Unitas, Latin for "unity," is an annual U.S. Southern Command-sponsored, multinational naval exercise designed to enhance security cooperation and improve coalition operations between South American and U.S. maritime forces. Southern Seas is a U.S. Southern Command-directed operation designed to strengthen relationships with regional partner nations and improve operational readiness for all assigned units.
