U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Garyth Barnes gives a professional military education course on warfighting at Jungle Warfare Training Center, Okinawa, Japan, Oct. 27, 2019. During their communication exercise, Marines with 7th Communication Battalion demonstrate their ability to establish and maintain communications in any environment, including the jungle. Barnes, a native of Memphis, Tenn., with a degree in international area and security studies, is a communications officer with Alpha Company, 7th Comm. Bn. "We have to be able to learn from our history, to leverage our mistakes into tools we can use today. D-Day was effective because we had that element of surprise. What most don't know is that we hadn't accounted for the sea state. It was too shallow. But they decided to push anyway, because it was our big assault, and they didn't see us coming. We did it in the end, but not without major losses. Better organization and planning could have minimized preventable casualties, and that victory would have been all the better." Part of the training focused on the unit’s ability to deploy small fire teams in support of long-range rapid deployments where the Marine Corps will need to establish austere bases.
