From left, Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center urology surgeons, Dr. Hsiang Chi (Cathy) McLaughlin and Maj. Tara Ortiz, take an operating room break while the patient is prepared for a robotic-assisted surgery. Surgeons undergo months of extensive training before they are qualified to perform robotic surgery. One advantage robotic-assisted surgeries have over open-cavity procedures is a reduction of surgeon fatigue. First approved for use in 2000 as a replacement for general, laparoscopic procedures, robotic systems like da Vinci have made the technical aspects of minimally invasive surgery easier because of the systems’ extended range of motion and flexibility.
