(Oct. 7, 2019) Damage Controlman 3rd Class David Renteria, left, assigned to the engineering department aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), assists Damage Controlman Fireman Iris Hernandez, assigned to the engineering department aboard George Washington, obtain a tight seal with a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) mask to test a SCBA bottle. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at the Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a nearly four-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades, and modernization.
