U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. William Crisman, a combat tracking dog trainer, with Third Law Enforcement Battalion, III Marine Information Group (MIG), poses for a photograph following obedience training at Camp Wilson, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California, Oct. 16, 2019. Chrisman has been in the Marine Corps for two years, and his companion, Cpl. Ludjo, a combat tracking dog with 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion, III MIG, has only been enlisted for 3 months. Crisman, a Newport, North Carolina native, joined the Marine Corps in search of a challenge that the Marine Corps could offer. Crisman enlisted as a military policeman with the goal to become a combat tracking dog trainer. The most important part of Crisman’s relationship with Ludjo is the connection; having a good connection with Ludjo allows them to do their job effectively. Crisman and Ludjo find missing people using their scent and last known location. The combat tracking dog trainers and military working dogs traveled to Twentynine Palms from Okinawa, Japan to gain more experience in the dry terrain. The dry climate of Twentynine Palms differs from the tropical climate in Okinawa because there are fewer surfaces for odors to attach to, which effects Ludjo’s ability to catch a scent.
