General Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., the 19th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, retires from the Marine Corps, Oct. 11, after 42 years of service, during a private ceremony in the USS Constitution Museum, Charlestown Navy Yard, Mass. Dunford, a Boston native who was also the 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps, was succeeded by 20th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Mark Milley during a ceremony, Sept. 30, on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, adjacent to the Pentagon. The USS Constitution, dubbed “Old Ironsides,” was commissioned on October 21, 1797 and is the oldest warship in the world.
