Lt. Col. Milton Ware, National Guard Liaison to U.S. Army Contracting Command, talks to family and friends of Sgt. Marcos Leonardo Gudino at the Gudino bridge dedication on Oct. 6, 2019. Gudino, a medic with the Illinois Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment, died on March 25, 2018 in an Interstate 90 accident involving his military ambulance while the unit returned from Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, to the unit's headquarters in Chicago. Gudino, who was about to join the Streamwood Police Department, was well-loved and respected in his Elgin, Illinois community prompting State Sen. Cristina Castro and State Rep. Anna Moeller to sponsor legislation to name the Illinois Route 20 bridge over Route 31 in his honor. The legislation passed unanimously. Ware, who was Guido's battalion commander, said naming a bridge for Gudino was appropriate because, as a Soldier and as a man, Gudino bridged differences and connected people.
