Retired Maj. Mike Flaherty, a former 2nd Lt. assigned to 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, runs alongside present day Golden Dragon Soldiers during the 26th anniversary Mogadishu Mile run, which commemorates the Battle of Mogadishu, October 3, at Fort Drum, New York. Flaherty was deployed with the Golden Dragons when unit was supporting Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia. The overarching events from October 3 and 4, 1993 were branded the Battle of Mogadishu, and later popularized in the film “Black Hawk Down.” Though the movie centers on a raid led by Task Force Ranger, the Golden Dragons kept their quick reaction force on standby and mobilized when the Rangers mission went awry. Following the run, a wreath was placed at the memorial outside the Golden Dragon’s headquarters building, Martin Hall, which was named for Pfc.
