U.S. Navy Cmdr. Gerald Olin, the commanding officer of the littoral combat ship USS Independence (LCS 2), communicates with the officer of the deck as the ship moves through the Gatun Lock during a transit of the Panama Canal April 15, 2012. The Gatun Lock is the first step in the Panama Canal transit where the Atlantic Ocean ends and the canal begins. Independence was en route to its new home port of San Diego.
