Lance Cpl. Jake C. Sanders conducts communications checks during a class aboard USS Pearl Harbor here May 9. The 20-year-old Menomonee Falls, Wis., native serves as a motor-transport mechanic for Battalion Landing Team 3/1, the ground combat element for the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The unit embarked the ship, as well as USS Makin Island and USS New Orleans in San Diego, Nov. 14, beginning a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific, Horn of Africa and Middle East regions.
