The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. Peter Pace, shakes hands with a Marine in the Al Asad Air Base operations tower, during a surprise visit with Iraqi government officials and other American political figures to discuss the rebuilding efforts of Al Anbar province, Iraq, on Sept. 3. Pace is visiting with Multi-National Forces-West in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Al Anbar province of Iraq to develop the Iraqi security forces, facilitate the development of official rule of law through democratic reforms and continue the development of a market based economy centered on Iraqi reconstruction.
