WASHINGTON NAVY YARD (Sept. 20, 2019) Ima Black, widow of the Navy’s first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON), describes at a photo of her late husband MCPON Delbert Black to Master Chief Yeoman Nathaniel Colding, senior enlisted leader of Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) and Glenn Gray, NHHC Archives division deputy director, during a tour of the National Museum of the United States Navy. Black enlisted in the Navy under the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) during WWII as a seaman first class storekeeper. The WAVES performed jobs in fields such as aviation, clerical, medical, communication, legal, intelligence, and science and technology. On June 12, 1948, President Harry Truman signed Public Law 625, the “Women’s Armed Services Integration Act”, which approved regular and Reserve component status for women in the military and disbanded the WAVES.
