Coalition forces wait for the beginning of the 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ali Al Salem, Kuwait, Sept. 11, 2019. Over the course of the three hours following World Trace Center One being struck by American Airlines Flight 11, 121 engine companies, 62 ladder companies and 27 fire officers were deployed to the scene. All off-duty firefighters were recalled — the first time the New York Fire Department had issued a total recall in over 30 years at the time. That day, 414 of those emergency responders lost their lives. Since then, 200 have died from medical issues due to the toxic chemicals across Ground Zero following the collapse of WTC 1 and WTC 2.
